Open Source or Commercial Software?

Over the years, debate has been rife on which one is superior between open source software and commercial software.

To date, connoisseurs in software engineering and expert users have not reached a conclusion on which one is superior between the two, though there exists a number of reasons in favor of open source.

As a subject expert, I have tried to piece together the comparisons between the two to help you understand which one best suits your operations.

For newbies, lets define the two:

  1. Open-source software is computer software with its source code made available by the developer to everybody to study, change, modify, enhance and distribute. An example is MySQL RDBMS or WordPress CMS
  2. Commercial software is a Computer software whose source code is exclusively owned and by the person, team, or organization that created it. They have exclusive rights to edit, inspect, change and enhance it. A notable example is Microsoft word.

Whereas the initial difference in the definition is about ownership, several other factors have been considered when doing real and technical comparisons.

If I tell you I am going to give a fair comparison between the two, then I must be lying,  because over the years that I have been studying and comparing the two, my bias has been tilted in favour of open source systems.

This is because open source systems are overseen by dedicated communities of developers who contribute modifications to continuously improve the products. The developers decide on the course of the software based on the needs of the community. Unlike commercial software developers who focus on a straight line of development “irregardless” of what other interested parties think.

Conclusion

If you have limited budgets and you want to experience the power of technology, go Open Source. But if you have all the resources and you want to experiment technology, then go open source.

Open source is the best platform for learning, experimenting, research and real time live solutions.

There being no any other business, I dismiss this class without costs. Remember the internet is Open infrastructure since nobody can claim ownership. Use it to the maximum and use it well.

Windows 11 now available: Will your PC support it?

  • Windows 11 preview build is now available for download but only to Insiders.
  • You need to enrol yourself as a Window Insider to be able to get Windows 11.
  • Microsoft is likely to release Windows 11 to everyone in October.
 

Windows 11 is now available for download, well, sort of. Microsoft has released the Windows 11 preview build today but it is meant for beta testers only. The beta testing programme for Windows is called Windows Insider and you need to be a member of this programme to be able to download and use early versions of Windows. The first version of Windows 11 that is available for anyone to download bears the build number 22000.51. However, I would not recommend downloading this version to your laptop or PC, which you use daily for work.

The Windows 11 preview build brings a new Start menu, new icons, new startup sound, and other visual changes, per what Microsoft outlined at the event. There is also a new File Explorer that replaces the ribbon with a new command bar that should simplify tools for you. The notification centre is also revamped, along with rounded edges for windows, new volume flyouts, and the Windows 11 widget that brings all necessary yet personalised information in one place and is available via the taskbar. The Windows 11 in this preview build supports new themes, including new wallpapers and both light and dark modes.

But while most things seem intact, this preview build does not include Android support and Microsoft Teams integration. Support for Android apps through Amazon Appstore is one of the mainstays for Windows 11 as it is likely to bring more customers to this OS, while Teams integration is something that is a result of the pandemic-induced shift in using Windows. Microsoft Skype is officially retiring as the go-to app for video calls and will be replaced by Teams in Windows 11. Both these things seem to be under development at this stage and should come in later builds, but definitely on the stable release build that may come out in October.

Step #3: Pick a domain name

Your domain name will be the name by which you will be known online, no matter what niche you choose. It’s your unique address on the Internet. Your domain will be yours as long as you continue paying the annual fee ($10 to $15 for a .com domain). Users who know your domain/URL (uniform resource locator) can simply type it into their browser’s address bar. Others will be able to discover you through search engines such as Google and Bing, so you definitely need to find a unique moniker.

Step #6: Find the right theme (blog design)

The first thing your blog’s front end needs is a face (design and layout). You want to create an environment that is both eye-catching and practical. In the long run, you want your visitors to easily find information on your site. You don’t want visitors to be discouraged by the colors you choose or the non-intuitive and unpractical way in which information is displayed. Your design can cause instant distrust of your blog or immediate acceptance.

Start your search for a theme as soon as your WordPress platform is installed. The look and feel of your new blog rely on the theme you choose. Your readers will first notice the overall appearance, before even taking a look at the content. Choose a theme that looks great, but also works for your unique content needs. Step #7: Write content and promote your blog

 

So far, you’ve captured a domain name, chosen your blog site and set up the theme, and you are ready to go. Your framework is complete. Now comes the moment of truth. You must learn how to write blog content – in the blogging world, any useful information that you bring to readers can be called “content.” It must be something people will want to interact with and come back to get more, something of value.

The next step is to figure out what content you need to make for your new blog and the best practices you should follow. Whether your blog is to be composed primarily of words, photos, graphics, audio, video, etc. – the content will be the bait that draws your crowd. Few will come just to see your new site.

Without great content, even the most well-designed, tightly-structured blogs will ultimately fail. The framework of the web is code – but the attraction of the web is the content found there.

Three things your content should do

  • Your content speaks to a specific audience and provides value to them in some significant way. If this sounds suspiciously like our Commandments, you are right. Drill the idea into your mind and never forget it: It’s not about you; it’s about them.
  • Your content should be easily accessible and attractively presented. Your presentation must equal the quality of your content. Here again, don’t cut corners on low-quality graphics or designs. Everything about your blog must attract your visitors and encourage them to interact with your content.
  • Your content may be commercially purposed, but should never be commercially focused. Never greet your visitors with pop-up ads and giant banner ads. Greet them with content and reasons to engage with that content. Let them know you are there to help them, not to use them.

  • Cornerstone content. Cornerstone (or evergreen) content continues to be relevant to its readers and gives them value years after the publish date. It is always fresh and up-to-date. It remains informative and retains its original quality. As its name implies – it is timeless.

Start promoting your blog

You’ve learned that the content will be the bait that draws your audience. You can write the most compelling copy the world has ever seen and design a blog interface that would sell people their own shoes…if no one sees the blog, though, all your work is in vain. Marketing and promotion happen every time you engage with your current and future readers. The success of your blog promotion will depend on the ability to engage in your niche.

Let your friends know about your blog

In the future, if you’re able to build one of the most popular blogs and become an authority in your niche, the advertisers would approach you to publish their posts.
